WORK EXPERIENCE: HUMAN RESOURCES

learn HOW to be a HR MANAGER

Hotels are a people business first and foremost and the team working in the business are just as important as the guests who walk through the door. The Human Resources (HR) Manager or HR Director is responsible for the wellbeing of the hotel’s staff and is a crucial member of the senior management team. Their duties include recruitment, training and development, workplace policy formation, and managing employee relations.

What are the opportunities for progression?

There are a number of routes into HR, from dedicated human resource management courses at diploma and degree level, to general hospitality and tourism management courses which include HR modules. From an entry-level HR Assistant role, you can progress to HR Supervisor and HR Manager or Director. Some HR Directors choose to move into general management while others prefer to stay within the HR function.

What can you expect during your work experience?

Through your work experience you will learn how the human resources department supports the hotel’s team, managing the hire of new candidates and developing training plans and structures for existing staff. Tasks may include helping to write job descriptions, liaising with recruiters, scheduling interviews and appointments, collating interview feedback, publishing online jobs listings, coordinating training sessions, preparing HR presentations, and learning about employment permits and the visa stamp system.

If you are interested in HR and would like to learn more, contact the HR department in your local hotel to see if you can get some work experience with them. You will find the list of hotels participating in the Transition Year Work Experience Programme here.
